Yet in old age, my generation will be even more important. After all, the reason that today’s politicians are so terrified of ditching the triple lock is that the elderly are the most important group of voters. Maybe they’d rather impoverish our children with crushingly high taxes instead. Ministers will radically have to cut costs. Unless we’re willing to perform our own hip ops. What we should be fretting about most of all, though, is the cost of our health care, not to mention social care.īy then, there’ll be far more pensioners needing the NHS – and far fewer workers to fund it. Along, no doubt, with bus passes and winter fuel allowances. How on earth will our poor children support us?įorget the triple lock – obviously that will be long gone. But the way things are going, my generation faces a terrifying old age. Ministers are struggling to make the sums add up as it is. One in four people in Britain will be elderly. In fact, experts predict that by 2050 – when I, at least theoretically, should be in retirement – the proportion will be a mind-boggling 25 per cent. Even as things stand, however, that’s an increasingly major worry – for the following reason.Īt present, around 18 per cent of this country’s population is aged 65 or above. Which is that the young couldn’t possibly afford to subsidise us all. Lower it to, say, 40, and they might just about avoid losing the next election.Īdmittedly, of course, there is one very slight weakness to my plan. Logically, the Tories should if anything be lowering the pension age. So by raising the pension age, Sir Jacob would be causing that demographic to shrink. What a mad suggestion.įor pity’s sake – pensioners are the only demographic left who still vote Tory. Earlier this year, Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg told MPs that the state pension age should be raised to 72. ![]()
